Working in an Emergency Operations Training is currently underway in Malaita and Isabel Provinces respectively. The trainings are led by their respective Provincial Governments through their Disaster Management Offices and is supported by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and the Community Resilience to Climate Change and Disaster Risk in Solomon Islands Project (CRISP).
The training aims to enhance the capacity of Provincial Government officers to effectively undertake roles and function within the Provincial Emergency Operation Centre (PEOC). The training will help trained personnel’s coordinate disaster responses to ensure vulnerable communities are better supported.
Opening the training, Malaita Provincial Secretary who is also the chair of the Provincial Disaster Committee, said in order to be effective in responding to disasters, Provincial Sectors and agencies must be capacitated through training and exercises so that they can effectively lead and coordinate responses at the Provincial level. The PDC Chair challenged participants to take this training seriously as the skills and knowledge are crucial for managing a disaster situation. He said he will be relying on this pool of people to provide him with very important advises to allow for informed decision making in an event of a disaster.
The training is conducted by staffs from the NDMO and PDMO with participants from various Provincial Government sectors including NGOs and the Red Cross. For Malaita Province Twenty six (26) participants are taking part in the training.
The training will be conducted over three (3) days from the 8 Sept to 10 Sept 2019
