A series of planned activities in commemoration of the annual World Environment Day/World Oceans Day/Coral Triangle Day Celebration this year in Solomon Islands. Some of the planned activities includes; radio talk-back show, media press statement, Barana Community Environment Expedition, Clean Up Program and the actual event amongst others which will be happening in Gizo/Western Province, Barana Community/Guadalcanal Province, Honiara City/Capital and in Buala/Isabel Province.
The Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management & Meteorology is working together with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Isabel Provincial Government, Pacific Ecosystem Based Adaptation to Climate Change Project and Barana Community amongst other stakeholders.
On Sunday 3rd June, a 2 hours radio talk-back show that was successfully held which was focused on the theme"Plastics" and panellist are from the Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources, Ministry of Environment ( MECDM) and WWF SI.
Today, on the 5th of June, a pre-record statement by the Minister of Environment ( MECDM) was broadcasted on the National Radio. Following that, the Solomon Islands Scouts lead a 1 hour Environment expedition at Barana Community located within the Queen Elizabeth II national park which was named in memorial of the Queen. A traditional exchange ceremony was made as part of the community welcoming the project at their land. This was followed take place early in the morning followed by a clean-up, tree planting and awareness program at the community.
A clean-up campaign organized by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources on Saturday 9th June. This clean-up program will take place in the capital city of Honiara which will involve various stakeholders.
During the upcoming Kodili Festival from 25th to 29th June the actual celebration of the World Environment Day/World Oceans Day & Coral Triangle Day will be held on 26th of June in Buala, Isabel Province. Lineup of activities includes canoe races, speech contest, singing contest and a pageant show at night.
